The Cost of Textile Waste
Developing countries have become the final destination for textiles that cannot be recycled, resold, or safely disposed of.

Across the world, mountains of unwanted clothing are piling up. Some countries are carrying the weight of the fashion industry’s excess. While consumers in wealthier nations refresh their wardrobes at unprecedented speed, the fallout lands disproportionately on communities in the Global South. Developing countries often lack the infrastructure, funding, or political power to refuse the influx. They have become the final destination for textiles that cannot be recycled, resold, or safely disposed of. It’s a crisis created by a linear fashion system that takes, makes, and discards, with little regard for the people or environments left to deal with the consequences.

The Global Dumping Ground

Every year, millions of tonnes of used clothing are exported from Europe and North America to countries in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Much of it arrives under the guise of “donations” or “second-hand resale,” but the reality is far more troubling.

A significant portion of these textiles are low‑quality, synthetic, damaged, or simply unsellable. They cannot be reused, repaired, or recycled—and so they become waste the moment they arrive.

Local markets are overwhelmed. Landfills overflow. Rivers and coastlines become clogged with discarded garments. Communities that haven’t produced this waste are forced to absorb it, often at the expense of their health, their environment, and their economic stability.

An Ellen MacArthur Foundation study revealed the scale of the problem: a dump truck of textile waste is landfilled or incinerated every single second. This is the direct result of a linear economy built on overproduction and disposability. It is unsustainable… socially, environmentally, and morally.

Why Synthetic Fibres Make the Problem Worse

At the heart of this crisis is the dominance of synthetic fibres. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other plastic‑based materials now make up the majority of global clothing production. They are cheap to manufacture, but they come with a heavy environmental cost.

Synthetic fibres do not biodegrade. When they are dumped in landfills or informal waste sites, they persist for hundreds of years, breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces of microplastic. These particles contaminate soil, waterways, and food systems. They release toxins as they degrade. They contribute to air pollution when burned. And they cannot be recycled at scale, especially once blended with other fibres.

For the countries receiving this waste, the challenge is immense. Without the infrastructure to manage plastic‑based textiles, communities are left with few options: burn them, bury them, or let them accumulate. None of these outcomes are safe or sustainable.

The Human Impact

The environmental damage is only part of the story. The human cost is equally profound.

In many regions, textile dumping disrupts local economies by undercutting domestic textile industries. It strains public health systems as burning synthetic waste releases toxic fumes. It contaminates water sources relied upon for drinking, farming, and fishing. And it places an unfair burden on communities who did not create the problem but are forced to live with its consequences.

This is a multifaceted issue of sustainability, waste and global inequality.

A Different Path: Natural, Biodegradable Fibres

This path is unsustainable. The solution lies in rethinking the materials we use and the systems we build around them.

Natural fibres, especially organic cotton, offer a fundamentally different future. Unlike synthetics, natural fibres are biodegradable. They return to the earth without leaving behind microplastics or toxic residues. They can be recycled more easily. They can be composted. And when sourced responsibly, they support healthier soils, cleaner water systems, and more resilient farming communities. They capture carbon as they grow.

This is why, in response to the growing crisis of textile waste, our products are made from natural, biodegradable materials, including post‑consumer recycled organic cotton. By choosing fibres that nature can break down, we reduce the burden on the countries currently absorbing the world’s discarded clothing.

Closing the Loop: From Waste to Resource

The future of fashion must be circular. That means designing products with their end‑of‑life in mind, choosing materials that can be safely returned to the earth or transformed into something new, and eliminating the concept of waste altogether.

Reimagining materials flow as a loop instead of a line means that instead of creating waste that goes to landfill, we can create new products from it. Post‑consumer recycled organic cotton is a powerful example of this principle in action. By recovering cotton fibres from garments that have already been worn and loved, we reduce the demand for virgin resources and keep valuable materials in circulation.

“Circularity is a necessity. And it starts with the fibres we choose.”

A Call for Responsibility

The plight of developing countries overwhelmed by textile dumping is a symptom of a broken system. It is a reminder that the choices made in design studios, boardrooms, and shopping baskets ripple across the globe. We cannot claim sustainability while relying on materials that create pollution, inequality, and long‑term harm.

Choosing natural fibres is a meaningful step towards solution. It reduces waste. It protects ecosystems. It supports circular systems. And it ensures that the clothes we wear do not become someone else’s burden.

As a sustainable clothing brand, we believe in taking responsibility for the full lifecycle of our products. That means choosing materials that honour the planet, respect the people who make and receive them, and contribute to a future where fashion no longer comes at the cost of someone else’s environment.

Because the truth is simple: what we make today has the power to shape a better tomorrow.

An Ellen MacArthur Foundation study revealed a dump truck of textile waste is landfilled or incinerated every single second.
