Our city has a rich and vibrant queer history that dates back to the 19th century. The city's reputation as a haven for the gay community began during the Napoleonic Wars when Brighton was a garrison town. The influx of soldiers and the town's growing popularity as a seaside resort attracted many gay people.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">The arrival of the railway in 1841 made Brighton more accessible, further boosting its popularity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">1950\u2019s, 60\u2019s and 70\u2019s<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">However, we should recognise that up to the 1960s homosexuality was heavily stigmatised in British society. Being \u2018openly\u2019 gay or lesbian was considered taboo. People who were discovered to be homosexual often faced discrimination and harassment. Sometimes even ostracism from their families and communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">In the 1950\u2019s the media was very hostile to homosexuals bracketing them with drug-users, juvenile delinquents, sex workers and communists as a threat to morality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">The \u2018homosexual problem\u2019 was discussed by MPs in Parliament. They debated how it should be treated and stopped. Due to this hostility the community formed underground networks. Meeting places like bars, clubs, and private gatherings provided spaces for socialising. These gatherings were held in secret and were subject to police raids.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">Against this backdrop, Brighton offered a degree of freedom which was unusual in the rest of the UK at the time. Word was spreading, and queer people came from all over the country to holiday and settle down. Brighton offered a refuge for people facing homophobia and discrimination in their home-towns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">Here in Brighton, a strong queer culture was thriving. With pubs, clubs, cafes and an enormous number of queer people. Many of whom felt welcome and at home for the first time in their lives.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">The 1970s saw a period of activism and visibility, with the formation of the Sussex Gay Liberation Front in 1971. Brighton's LGBTQ+ scene continued to grow.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">Brighton Pride<\/span><\/h2><p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brighton-pride.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\"><u>Brighton Pride<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\"> began in the early 1990s,. It\u2019s now one of the largest and best Pride events in the UK. It is a major annual event which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. Brighton Pride celebrates LGBTQ+ people and also serves as a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brighton-pride.org\/campaigning\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\"><u>platform for human rights and equalities activism<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">Brighton Today<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">Today, Brighton is known as a welcoming and inclusive city. It is a bit of a bubble, slightly immune to some of the world's negative forces. This is just one of the reasons we love it here.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">It has come as a shock that In recent weeks that multiple executive orders have come out of the White House targeting the LGBTQ+ population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">So in February LGBTQ+ history month it is important to remember that our rights to equality are hard won and easily lost. And that whilst Brighton is a beacon of hope, elsewhere in the world human rights are being eroded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">Salty Soul Pride Collection<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-family:'Open Sans', sans-serif;\">We think PRIDE is for every day.
